Research Paper Note Cards
Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2 Language Arts, Ms. Hill Adapted from

2

What goes on a note card Information that you get from another source
Where you got the information The topic or assertion/claim it supports

3

How to take another author’s information?
Paraphrase Summarize Quote DON’T PLAGIARIZE!!!!

4

PLAGIARISM Any time you take a writer’s words and use them as your own, you are plagiarizing.

5

Using another writer’s words… the right way.
Paraphrase/Summarize Quote Include your own thoughts AND ALWAYS GIVE THE CREDIT TO THE REAL AUTHOR!

6

Paraphrase/Summarize
Summarize (compress/shrink down) in your own words Translate and rewrite what the author is saying·

7

Example of what you read:
“… another study … discovered that the extent of that time commitment was ‘not associated with higher or lower scores on any [achievement] tests.’  By contrast, the amount of time children spent reading for pleasure was strongly correlated with higher scores. “ (“Does Homework Improve Learning, Alfie Kohn)

8

Example paraphrased: Study shows (+ or -) standard test scores no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent pleasure reading = higher test results.

9

Example quoted: Use quotation marks around direct quotes
Use NO MORE than 4 lines in a quote Includ author’s last name and page number directly after the quote. For example: “The amount of time children spent reading for pleasure was strongly correlated with higher scores.” (Kohn, p2)

10

Stay organized… In order to keep your ideas in order, and to remember where you found the ideas, there are four items that you will include on each index card

11

4 Items to include on card
Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2 Topic where you found the information paraphrased information or direct quote page where you found this information

12

1. Card Topic Think of it as the main idea (the claim or assertion) that your content supports. Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2

13

Card Topic For example, if your resolution is that homework is pointless, your claims supporting that assertion may fall into these categories: Educational value Student workload Free time Learning burnout

14

2. Source The source is the book, magazine, website where you found the information. Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2

15

Source numbers Give the source a number that corresponds to the number on your source page Create a bibliography of sources List by the identifying number you used on the notecard

16

3. information The fact, thought or quote taken from the original sources. Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2

17

information Be sure to paraphrase at this stage, then you will be certain not to accidentally plagiarize someone else’s work. Avoid putting more than one idea on a note card/ Only put in direct quote that which you plan to quote directly include the specific source ( ).

18

4. page numbers Put page numbers on your note cards for term paper citations and to speed access to information from original sources. Improved Performance Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2

19

Sample Note Cards Organized by Card Topic Improved Performance
Source #1 Study found standard test scores (+ or -) no relation to time or amt hw BUT time spent reading for pleasure = higher test results. p.2 Student Workload Source #2 Students find it hard to work all day and also have hours of work each night. p.3 Free Time Source #5 Surveys of parents by the NEA suggested that activities outside of class were negatively impacted by overwork. p.2 Learning Burn Out Source #1 Learning becomes identified with Overwork and lack of other opportunities. p.2

User Rights Assignment Back To Not Defined

Is it possible to put a Local Policy User Rights Assignment back to Not Defined? There is not a checkbox to mark it as Not Defined. Is it possible to set any of the User Rights Assignments back to Not Defined?

I am trying to find an area of a Group Policy that is causing an issue with the installation of a Windows Feature. I have removed the computer from the domain and many parts of the GPO remains on the computer including User Rights Assignment. I am suspicious that this is causing the error I am getting. I would like to go through the User Rights Assignment to see what is causing the issue. If I can se it back to Not Defined per item them I can see what is causing the issue. But I do not see a way to check a box to put it back. I can remove everyone from the list of users/groups but that just makes the list blank and doesn’t set it to Not Configured.

  • If a local policy is configured as "Not Defined", it means the current value is the default value, which is either the value for enabled or the value for disabled. There a reason you cannot simply just set the value of the policy back to "not defined’ using the group policy editor? Encourage you to provide more information, perhaps even explain what problem you are trying to solve, so we can answer your question.

  • Tell us the exact policy. What it modified in the registry should be easy to determine removing the keys will be how this is done

User Right Assignment don’t have a “default” configuration.

This is due to the fact that these settings are modified by when certain Windows roles and features are installed. Other applications can also modify these rights, creating a situation where a one-size-fits-all definition of default would leave many systems half functional.

Further, the User Right Assignments fall into a broader category of GP settings that cannot be conveniently reverted to a default state due to an effect known as Group Policy tattooing.

You must apply your own “default” settings

If you only have a few User Rights to modify, edit the settings through the Local Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc) and refer to another workstation that has the desired rights assignments for your configuration.

If you have many User Rights to modify, then consider using the Secedit command-line tool to export the settings from a computer with the desired configuration and then apply them into the target machine. Example commands:

Export the current machine’s User Rights Assignments:

Secedit /export /db SecDbContoso.sdb /mergedpolicy /cfg SecContoso.inf /areas User_Rights

Apply the exported User Rights Assignments to the local machine:

secedit /configure /db SecDbContoso.sdb /cfg SecContoso.inf /areas User_Rights /overwrite

  • This Microsoft support article explains why it’s not possible to restore Windows Security settings to a so-called default state and offers some possible workarounds.

  • This and this article discuss Group Policy tattooing and its implications for Windows Security Settings.

Applies to

  • Windows 10

Describes steps to configure a security policy setting on the local device, on a domain-joined device, and on a domain controller.

You must have Administrators rights on the local device, or you must have the appropriate permissions to update a Group Policy Object (GPO) on the domain controller to perform these procedures.

When a local setting is inaccessible, it indicates that a GPO currently controls that setting.

To configure a setting using the Local Security Policy console

  1. To open Local Security Policy, on the Start screen, type secpol.msc, and then press ENTER.
  2. Under Security Settings of the console tree, do one of the following:

    • Click Account Policies to edit the Password Policy or Account Lockout Policy.
    • Click Local Policies to edit an Audit Policy, a User Rights Assignment, or Security Options.
  3. When you find the policy setting in the details pane, double-click the security policy that you want to modify.

  4. Modify the security policy setting, and then click OK.

    Note

    • Some security policy settings require that the device be restarted before the setting takes effect.
    • Any change to the user rights assignment for an account becomes effective the next time the owner of the account logs on.

To configure a security policy setting using the Local Group Policy Editor console

You must have the appropriate permissions to install and use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), and to update a Group Policy Object (GPO) on the domain controller to perform these procedures.

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
  2. In the console tree, click Computer Configuration, click Windows Settings, and then click Security Settings.
  3. Do one of the following:

    • Click Account Policies to edit the Password Policy or Account Lockout Policy.
    • Click Local Policies to edit an Audit Policy, a User Rights Assignment, or Security Options.
  4. In the details pane, double-click the security policy setting that you want to modify.

    Note

If this security policy has not yet been defined, select the Define these policy settings check box.

  5. Modify the security policy setting, and then click OK.

Note

If you want to configure security settings for many devices on your network, you can use the Group Policy Management Console.

To configure a setting for a domain controller

The following procedure describes how to configure a security policy setting for only a domain controller (from the domain controller).

  1. To open the domain controller security policy, in the console tree, locate GroupPolicyObject [ComputerName] Policy, click Computer Configuration, click Windows Settings, and then click Security Settings.
  2. Do one of the following:

    • Double-click Account Policies to edit the Password Policy, Account Lockout Policy, or Kerberos Policy.
    • Click Local Policies to edit the Audit Policy, a User Rights Assignment, or Security Options.
  3. In the details pane, double-click the security policy that you want to modify.

    Note

If this security policy has not yet been defined, select the Define these policy settings check box.

  4. Modify the security policy setting, and then click OK.

Important

  • Always test a newly created policy in a test organizational unit before you apply it to your network.
  • When you change a security setting through a GPO and click OK, that setting will take effect the next time you refresh the settings.

39 questions to ask to fall in love

Grow

Want to Fall in Love With Your Partner Again? Science Says to Ask Them These 36 Questions

Love is more than a feeling; it’s a choice.

By Melanie Curtin Writer, activist @ melaniebcurtin

Relationships are hard. They can bring out the best in us, yes, but also the worst. They test the very essence of our beings: our capacity for forgiveness; our ability to trust (both ourselves and another); the true extent of our self-love; the strength of our   boundaries ; and the power of attachment.

Anything that can help bring us together, then, should be explored. And one scientific finding about love rises above others in the literature, if only for its rom-com level of magic.

Yes, I’m talking about the study made famous by the viral New York Times article by psychologist Mandy Len Catron. It not only outlined the original study, but backed it up by revealing that Catron herself had tested the concept … and fallen in love with her question-answering companion.

The original research was conducted by psychologist Arthur Aron at Stony Brook University. He split participants up into two groups, then had people pair up to talk to one another for 45 minutes. One group made small talk; the other received a list of 36 questions they went through one at a time — a list that got increasingly more personal. They then shared four minutes of sustained eye contact.

If there was ever a question of whether you can generate intimacy in a lab setting, it was answered by this study. Six months later, one of the pairs was in love. When they got married, they invited the whole lab staff to the ceremony.

When Catron, author of the New York Times piece, did the questions with an acquaintance, she wasn’t totally prepared, especially for the eye contact at the end:

“[T]he real crux of the moment was not just that I was really seeing someone, but that I was seeing someone really seeing me. Once I embraced the terror of this realization and gave it time to subside, I arrived somewhere unexpected.”

The unexpected place? It was a state of being more than anything, and one that led to more connection than perhaps either thought possible.

“I wondered what would come of our interaction. If nothing else, I thought it would make a good story. But I see now that the story isn’t about us; it’s about what it means to bother to know someone, which is really a story about what it means to be known.”

We all want to be known. We want to be known by our friends, our colleagues, our family members, even our neighbors. We want to be seen for what we have to offer, what we provide, for who we are.

But the person we often crave to feel most known by is our partner. This is the person with whom we share the most intimate details of our lives (not to mention our bodies). It’s the person who sees us at our best and our worst. The one who knows our history and is a primary part of our future.

We want them to know us — really know us, and these questions can help. As Catron says, “Most of us think about love as something that happens to us,” she said. “We fall. We get crushed. But what I like about this study is how it assumes that love is an action.”

There are lots of ways to celebrate upcoming Valentine’s Day. This year, consider doing something different. If you’re not in a relationship, propose doing this experiment with someone you’ve always thought was interesting but have yet to take the leap with. What do you have to lose?

And if you’re in a relationship, skip the fancy dinner or other high-pressure, conventional thing.

Instead, grab a bottle of wine and make the choice to commit to the magic of the questions. Allow the vulnerability of the answers to carry you even closer together. Take on the challenge of revealing yourself even more deeply to the person you cherish most in the world, and revel in the soul-deep connection that can ensue.

Take action.

Fall in love.

Set 1

1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
2. Would you like to be famous? In what way?
3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?4. What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?
5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?
7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
11. Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.
12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

Set 2

13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?
14. Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
16. What do you value most in a friendship?
17. What is your most treasured memory?
18. What is your most terrible memory?
19. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?
20. What does friendship mean to you?
21. What roles do love and affection play in your life?
22. Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of five items.
23. How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?
24. How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?

Set 3

25. Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling _______.”
26. Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share _______.”
27. If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for him or her to know.
28. Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you’ve just met.
29. Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.
30. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
31. Tell your partner something that you like about them already.
32. What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
33. If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?
34. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?
35. Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?
36. Share a personal problem and ask your partner’s advice on how he or she might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen.

Additional Information

The MFM Fellowship program at the Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine is an extremely well rounded program offering a huge clinical volume at two tertiary care institutions as well as the opportunity for basic science research under the guidance of a PhD mentor at the internationally renowned Feinstein Institute of Medical Research on campus. There are 13 Maternal Fetal Medicine attendings across the two campuses, and 42 residents in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.
There are over 12,000 deliveries annually at the two tertiary sites and 27,000 in the Health Care System providing a tremendous opportunity for clinical experience. Our two prenatal diagnostic centers perform over 50,000 procedures annually.

Our fellowship program offers 12 months of research, basic science, clinical, or both. There are 18 months of Maternal Fetal Medicine rotations, divided equally between North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. The MFM rotations are also divided equally between prenatal diagnosis and clinical in patient and outpatient maternal fetal medicine. One month is spent in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, the Neonatal intensive Care Unit (at the Cohen Childrens Hospital, a freestanding childrens hospital with over 150 beds), two months on Labor and Delivery, and one month in fetal echocardiography. Training in chorionic villus sampling is offered.

North Shore University Hospital and the Long Island Jewish Medical Center are located in a beautiful area in Long Island, only miles away from north and south shore beaches, as well as the cultural life in Manhattan. We offer the best of both worlds, both in terms of training and lifestyle.

Anchor Say Cheese Campaign @ Bread History

Print Friendly, PDF & EmailPrint Friendly

New Products

In conjunction with second phase of Anchor Say Cheese campaign, patisserie chefs from Fonterra Foodservices Malaysia (the company behind Anchor brand) introduced four new products in partnership with Bread History using top quality real butter, cream cheese, milk and cream from its highly popular Anchor range.

Exterior

To be honest, this is our first time reviewing a bakery. Bakery shops are our usual stop when we are thinking of our breakfast for the next morning. Bread History is a well-known bakery in Penang with the latest 15th outlet to be opening soon in Sunshine Jelutong.

Interior

Unlike other bakeries selling only breads, buns and cakes, Bread History at sPICE (formerly PISA), Bayan Lepas, Penang has a cafe at the first floor serving Western cuisine so don’t be surprised when your friends told you that they are having lunch/dinner at Bread History.

New Products

A bit history of Anchor. Anchor is a dairy from New Zealand since year 1886. Fonterra is the International exporter for Anchor. You will find Anchor products such as butter and cheddar cheese in supermarket. Phase 2 of Anchor Say Cheese campaign is more European themed and have Chef’s Signature Series labeled on the products.

Almond Rosa

Two new cakes are introduced during Phase 2, each comes with an attractive transparent box suitable for gifting purposes.

Almond Rosa

The first one being Almond Rosa – a nutty almond butter sponge cake with a rich layer of cream cheese.

Cheeznie

Second cake being Cheeznie – cream cheese sandwiched between two slices of decadent chocolate brownies and topped with chopped walnuts. Both Almond Rosa and Cheeznie are priced at RM5.90 each. Pretty reasonable considering the quality you will receive.

First Love

Two buns are introduced for Phase 2, including First Love – a sweet bread with a brown sugar cream cheese in the center sprinkled with brown sugar for that added crunch, guaranteeing love at first bite.

Lady Marmalade

The last one being Lady Marmalade, which is also our favorite. Lady Marmalade is a sweet bread with an orange cream cheese filling topped with orange candied peel. Compared to others, Lady Marmalade has delightful aftertaste. We actually brought one home and found out that it even tasted better if left in fridge overnight.

The Launching

“We are very excited to be partnering with Fonterra Fodservices once again, as the Anchor brand is known for its commitment to quality and excellence.” said Mr. Simon Auyong, the owner of Bread History. As a matter of fact, Bread History is using Anchor brand in most of its products. These exclusive Anchor’s signature creations are available at selected bakeries throughout the country from now until December 2016.

Ideas and Word Lists for Kids Charades

Charades is an all-inclusive, fun game that is suitable for all ages, including children.

The rules are simple: one person will act something out, and the others must guess what they are trying to act out. It could be a book, movie, song, celebrity, fictional character, TV show, object, or whatever else tickles your fancy! One of the challenges of playing charades is thinking of topics. Topics have to be possible to act out, and they also can’t be too obscure, or nobody will know the answer.

Below is a list of some suggestions of topics for playing charades, specially thought up for kids. Have fun, and remember: no talking! Have fun!

School’s in for government tech types

Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) is running an e-learning initiative that is starting to transform how federal government employees acquire new skills.

The program, the ICT E-Learning Gateway, enables users across federal departments to learn IT as well as Office Application (OA) skills, quickly and effectively.

Under the program, PWGSC licenses courses from e-learning provider SkillSoft Inc. and, in turn, offers them to other federal government ministries, agencies and departments.

So far, the department has sold about 7,800 licences to 21 different federal entities. However, only around 65 to 75 per cent of purchased licenses are being used, according to Michael Turner, assistant deputy minister for IT services with PWGSC. Government agencies tend to buy licences in bulk, Turner said, and then market them internally to staff, but because everyone does not sign up for e-learning courses some licences go unused. SkillSoft Inc. provides PWGSC with about 1,000 courses for IT and Office Application (OA) training, 250 of them in French.

Of the 7,800 licenses, 4,100 relate to IT training and the remaining 3,700 are for OA instruction, which includes courses on how to use Microsoft Excel, for example. After a year-long pilot project, the solution went into production. The first year was so successful that in the second year users increased by 50 per cent, Turner said. This year, he expects to see a 20 per cent jump in enrolment and at least four more government agencies signing on. PWGSC also licenses the OA courses to the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS), a learning provider for federal public servants that offers OA courses along with its management training.

Turner said PWGSC has just renegotiated its contract with SkillSoft to reduce licensing costs for the E-learning Gateway from to $475 a user, down from $520. Bulk purchasing can lower costs further.

Choosing an e-learning course provider was the only feasible route for PWGSC to bring this type of training to its employees, since it would have been both too time-consuming and too expensive for PWGSC to develop the courses in-house, Turner said.

By licensing SkillSoft courses, PWGSC didn’t have to add anything to its IT infrastructure as the courses are hosted off-site by SkillSoft. Employees only need a Web browser and login information to access the service. If users have difficulty completing a course, they can call a toll-free help line or post their difficulties on an online bulletin board to be reviewed by PWGSC staff.

So far, Turner said, PWGSC is satisfied with this approach to e-learning. In fact, 85 per cent of users polled said they would recommend e-learning to colleagues. About 300 employees at PWGSC use the E-Learning Gateway. The biggest users are the Canada Revenue Agency and the Department of National Defence, Turner said.

“E-learning,” he said, “is very effective for both just-in-time learning and learning modules.” Just-in-time learning occurs when a user has to solve an immediate problem, for example, learning Extensible Markup Language (XML) or .Net development. E-learning has also been successful when users need to take a series of courses, or modules, associated with a particular vendor such as Cisco Systems Inc. or Novell Inc. However, for more intensive training, PWGSC’s IT staff will follow a blended learning curriculum that involves in-class courses from academic institutions in conjunction with e-learning.

Indications are that other levels of government will start to sign on to PWGSC’s ICT E-Learning Gateway. Turner said the program has generated interest from provinces and municipalities across Canada and partnerships for e-learning are in the works.

Public Works takes its IT learning to the Web

Three years ago the Ministry of Public Works and Government Services of Canada (PWGSC) began an e-learning initiative that is changing how federal government IT professionals learn new skills.

Through this initiative, PWGSC licenses courses from e-learning course provider SkillSoft Inc. and, in turn, licenses them to other federal government ministries, agencies and departments. The service is called the ICT E-Learning Gateway.

PWGSC so far has sold about 7,800 licences to 21 different departments, ministries and agencies in the federal government. However, Michael Turner, assistant deputy minister, IT services at PWGSC in Gatineau, Que., estimates only 65 per cent to 75 per cent of purchased licences are being used. He said government agencies tend to buy licences in bulk, then market these internally to staff. But since not all staff sign up for e-learning courses, some of the purchased licences remain unused. Turner said this is a normal adoption trend and it takes time before everyone signs on to the program.

SkillSoft Inc. provides PWGSC with about 1,000 courses for IT training and Office Application (OA) training, 250 of which are in French. Of the 7,800 licences, 4,100 are for IT training and the remaining 3,700 are for OA training. OA training includes courses that teach users how to use Microsoft Corp.’s Excel spreadsheet. After completing a year-long pilot project, the solution recently went into production. The first year was so successful that the number of licences sold in the second year increased by 50 per cent, Turner said. In 2005, Turner expects to see another 20 per cent jump in enrolment and have at least four more government agencies sign on.

PWGSC also licenses the OA courses to the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS), a learning provider for Canadian civil servants that offers the OA courses along with its own classes. These include courses in leadership, career and professional development, and public administration. Additionally, PWGSC just renegotiated its contact with SkillSoft.

The new agreement allows PWGSC to reduce licensing costs for the e-learning gateway from $520 to $475 per user, Turner said. An e-learning course provider was the only feasible solution for PWGSC, since it would have been too time-consuming and expensive for PWGSC to develop the courses in-house, Turner said.

By licensing SkillSoft courses PWGSC didn’t need to add anything to its IT infrastructure because SkillSoft hosts the courses off-site. Employees only need a Web browser and login information to access the service. If users have difficulty completing a course, they can call a toll-free help line or post their questions and comments on an online bulletin board to be reviewed by PWGSC staff.

So far, PWGSC is extremely satisfied with this approach to e-learning, Turner said. He added that an internal poll indicated 85 per cent of users would recommend e-learning to colleagues. “E-learning is very effective for both just-in-time learning and learning modules,” Turner said. Just-in-time learning occurs when a user has to solve an immediate problem — for example, learning Extensible Markup Language (XML) or .Net development. Learning modules are a series of courses that are part of a certification program from a vendor such as Cisco Systems Inc. or Novell Inc.

Other levels of government are likely to sign on to PWGSC’s ICT E-Learning Gateway. Turner said the program has generated interest from provinces and municipalities across Canada and partnerships for e-learning are currently under way.
